Filtering on the canvas
Filters hide nodes without taking them off the canvas. They’re made by pointing at the arrangement itself; Arrange’s popover lists them as chips and takes them off.
Ways to filter
| On | Do | Keeps |
|---|---|---|
| the ruler (Rows) or baseline (sorted Stacks) | drag along it; the pointer turns to a selection cross and a band follows | the values between where you pressed and let go (a range chip: “Year 1948 – 1960”) |
| a lane, wedge, island or column name | click | hides that category (chip: “Type: not Source”); click again brings it back |
| the same | ⌥-click | only that category (“Type: only Concept”); again, all |
| a ring’s name (Rings) | click | only that ring (a range filter over its values); again, every ring |
| a turn’s value (Spiral) | click | only the first N, up to that value; again, everything |
| the answer pager’s chips | click a type chip, a Filter menu entry, or Connected to “X” | the same lane filters, and Near for the answer’s hub |
| the range pill on the ruler | click its × | clears the range |
Hiding the last visible lane beeps instead of emptying the canvas.
What a filter does
- Filtered-out nodes stay on the canvas, unseen; the status capsule says “48 of 212 nodes · 164 filtered out”; the lane keeps a thin collapsed strip (“164 hidden”) so it can be brought back.
- The layout places only what passes.
- Expanding a node brings in only neighbours the filter would show. Selecting a hidden node from a list says ““X” is hidden by the canvas’s filter. Clear it under Arrange to see it.”
- On an answer, the results list follows the filter and sort, and paging brings in only what’s kept (“The answer pages through only what’s kept”).
- Lines whose nodes are hidden aren’t drawn.
The chips
In Arrange’s Filters section:
Type: only Concept·Type: not Source and Thinker·Kind: only Paper, Book, Talk and 2 moreYear 1948 – 1960(a range)Near “Entropy”(an answer’s hub)Connected to “Entropy”(arranged around a node)
× takes one off; Show everything clears them all. The hint under them changes with the form: Drag along the ruler to keep a range. Click a lane’s name to hide it; ⌥-click to show only it. / Click a ring’s name to show only it… / Click a turn’s value to show only what’s inside it. / Drag along the baseline to keep a range…
Filters and the two canvases
Graph’s canvas keeps its arrangement between launches but not its filters. The answer canvas keeps its arrangement from one answer to the next and starts each answer unfiltered, except that “Connected to” (arrange around) is kept.
