Zoom, labels and what’s kept

Zoom in bands

Free, nodes zoom with the picture. Arranged, the zoom works like a map’s: from 100% in, nodes and names keep one size on screen, so zooming in spreads them apart and makes room for more names; from there down to 30% they shrink with everything else; below that they stay small dots rather than vanish. Lines keep their weight the same way, drawn quieter than on a free canvas so where the nodes stand reads first.

Names

Nodes stand close on a ruler or in a grid, so a name is left out rather than drawn over another: the selected and hovered first, then left to right. In a grid a name is cut to its cell. Below 42% zoom names hide. Lines’ names go where neither a node nor a node’s name is, the lit and hovered first, each in a box of whatever it sits on (the canvas, or the lane’s shade).

The chrome (ruler, ticks, lane and ring names, pills) is drawn in screen space at one size whatever the zoom, and holds to the canvas’s edges: lane names to the left, the ruler to the top.

Pinned nodes

Nodes you pinned go where the arrangement says while it lasts, and back where you pinned them when the canvas is free again. Dragging a node on an arranged canvas doesn’t pin it: it glides back to its place.

Fitting

⌘0 and the zoom control’s fit frame the arrangement with room for the ruler and the names on its rim.
