The four forms

One order and one split can be laid out four ways. The form picker says it in a line each:

FormIn a lineSort meansSplit means
FreePlaced by their connections. Pick a form to lay the canvas out by its values instead.——
RowsAlong a ruler left to right, split into lanes top to bottom.position along a rulera lane per category
RingsThe first in the middle, the rest in rings outward, split into wedges.distance from the centrea wedge per category
SpiralOne line wound out from the centre, in order: follow it from first to last.position along the spirala spiral (island) per category
StacksColumns standing on a baseline, one per value: how many, at a glance.a column per value or stretcha column per category (unsorted) or a band within each column (sorted)

Rows

  • A ruler above the lanes with tick labels: round numbers when by value, each run of equal values otherwise, as many as fit. Its name pill at the left flips the direction (an arrow shows which way); a range pill before it shows a kept range with × to clear it. The ruler sticks to the top of the canvas when scrolled past, over a soft strip.
  • A lane band per category, alternating shades, with a name pill at its top left (colour dot, name, count). A lane whose nodes are all filtered out collapses to a thin dashed strip with “12 hidden”, struck through, to bring it back.
  • Nodes on the same value stand one above another, 64 points apart, room for a name between them.
  • Unsorted but split, lanes are grids of cells 200 points wide, each with a node and its name.
  • On a paged answer a gold Next 25 pill waits just past the last node on the ruler.

Rings

  • Concentric rings shaded in turn; the first node (or nodes) in the middle, then one ring per value or stretch outward. Ring names run up the twelve o’clock corridor (“1948–1959 · 12”); click one to keep only that ring, again for all.
  • Split, the rings are cut into wedges, one per category, named round the rim. Within a ring, nodes turn toward what they’re connected to in the rings inside.
  • The ring with no value is muted and only informs.
  • The header pills (range, “Year · lowest first, from the centre”) sit at the top left.

Spiral

  • One line wound out from the centre, in order. Each turn where the line crosses twelve o’clock gets a pill: the value reached by then and “first 12”; click it to keep only what’s inside that turn.
  • Split, one spiral per category (an island), named above it; islands stand in a row when the categories’ order means something (enum options, yes/no), or pack together biggest first (types).
  • Arranged around a node, the node stays in the centre whatever the sort.

Stacks

  • Columns standing on a baseline, a soft bar behind each, the count over its top.
  • Sorted: one column per value or stretch; the baseline is a ruler with labels under it, and dragging along it keeps a range; split as well, each column is banded by category, with the categories named in a row over the tallest column.
  • Unsorted: one column per category, named under each.
  • A collapsed column (filtered out) is a dashed outline on the baseline.

In Rings, Spiral and Stacks every node has an exact place and the forces are off; in Rows the forces only keep nodes apart within a lane.
